Mission Statement:

I have been a Spanish teacher for fifteen years. I was fortunate enough to be able to live in Spain where I took Spanish immersion courses at the University of Seville and traveled to different Spanish speaking cities each week to study the history, culture, and art.   It was there that I grew to love the language and culture, and realized what an impact the language has in our country.

My mission is to teach the language and culture of the Spanish speaking countries, as well as provide a safe, comfortable learning environment in order for students to reach their maximum potential.  It is important to me that students open their minds to difference, and feel comfortable speaking the foreign language in my classroom.  Not only am I preparing the students to use their language skills in the classroom, but also to be successful in this growing multicultural world.

4th Grade Spanish

In 4th grade students are introduced to basic conversation, vocabulary and grammar.  Through TPR, verbal, and written forms of communication, the 4th graders become familiar with commonly used phrases to express greetings, feelings, days, dates, weather and seasons just to name a few.  Each concept is expanded upon through thematic units.  Students will sing songs, role play, and perform plays as extension activities to each thematic unit.  One of the first units they will be learning is the birthday unit.

5th grade Spanish

In 5th grade students build upon their knowledge and skills learned in 4th grade.  The year will begin with review on greeting and and exchange of pleasantries. The first unit will be based on classroom objects and commands.  Throughout the year, a few of the units students will be learning will be based on describing the classroom, the house, and people. Students will sing songs, role play, and perform plays as extension activities to each thematic unit. By the end of the year the 5th graders should be prepared to begin 6th grade Spanish.

6th grade Spanish

In 6th grade students begin the use of the middle school version of the high school text. Out students learn to communicate in the language stressing, speaking, listening reading, and writing. Our goal is to finish four units covering such topics as greetings, descriptions of people and things, likes and dislikes, activities we can do, places we can go, and school related activities. The vocabulary we learn is related to each topic. Grammar topics include the present tense verb conjugation of regular as well as several irregular verbs, the use of masculine and feminine for all nouns, agreement of subjects and adjectives, the formation of the verb "gustar" to express likes, and many more grammar issues. Along with communicating in the language, the students learn about various Spanish-speaking countries and Spanish speaking areas in the United States. Each student receives two graphic organizers with vocabulary lists for each unit. These are great study tools. Please check file manager for H.W. and vocabulary lists. .

7th grade Spanish

In 7th grade we have a thorough review of Chapters 1-4. Our goal is to reach Chapter 6 of our textbook. We continue  to improve our communication skills in all areas. Vocabulary topics include family and description of family members, house and chores, food and ordering and commenting on food/meals in a restaurant, and our daily routine. Grammar topics include the expansion of present tense verbs to include stem-changing verbs and reflexive verbs, commands, possessive adjectives, direct object pronouns, etc. We continue to learn culture through our textbook visits of Spanish-speaking areas of the world. Students receive graphic organizers and vocabulary lists to use as study guides. Please check file manager for H.W. and vocabulary lists.

8th grade Spanish

In 8th grade the students have a very thorough review of chapters 1-6. Our goal is to complete the textbook(all 10 chapters). We continue to improve our communication skills. Vocabulary topics include clothing and shopping, holidays and parties, traveling and city vocabulary. The main grammar topic is an extensive study of the past tense. We continue to learn culture through our textbook visits of Spanish-speaking areas of the world. Students receive graphic organizers and vocabulary lists to use as study guides. Please check file manager for H.W. and vocabulary lists. .
