Congratulations OCIS Class of 2017

Once again, congratulations to our OCIS Class of 2017.  Below, please find the words of wisdom that I gave you during our Promotional Ceremonies.  Good luck in you future!

I want to speak to you from my heart as I have known some of you for five years…yes five years…you spend more time in this building then any. While your great classroom teachers have taught you lessons about politics, music, math and how to be better writers, I have tried to teach you life lessons. So, I wanted to do that one more time. I recently read an article about truths. I am going to paraphrase a bit and add a few, so here goes.

Ø #1 You will only live the life you create for yourself. That means you will be pressured, persuaded…but your life is yours alone. My mom always told us your actions speak louder than your words. Act as if someone is always watching…and let me tell you today in 2017, someone always is

Ø #2 Being busy doesn’t always mean that you are accomplishing something…don’t be one of those people always rushing around, sending texts, late for everything…own your time and use it to do good for yourself and for others

Ø #3 Failure, to an extent, always happens before success…do you think any of our masterpieces in art were ever completed on the first try? The same is true of great literary works and songs you hear on the radio…they too are written and rewritten...and rewritten. Learn to forgive yourself, move on and most importantly…learn from your mistakes

Ø #4 Thinking and doing are not the same…you are what you actually do, not what you say you will do. Good things come to people who set goals and act on them

Ø #5 You don’t have to wait for an apology to actually begin forgiving someone…the act of forgiveness feels so good…it is wasted time and energy to hold a grudge and it will get you nowhere

Ø #6 What you own is not who you are, glitz and glamour is not what life is about…Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band puts it best in one of my favorite songs…he writes “It’s funny how it’s the little things in life that mean the most…Not where you live, what you drive or the price tag on your clothes…There’s no dollar sign on a peace of mind…this I’ve come to know…”

Ø And #7 However good or bad a situation is now, it will change. When life and things are good…enjoy. When things aren’t good…my parents often told me it can always be worse…but it will get better…trust in those who you can trust and lean on those whom you know will help. It will always getter better

I leave you with the words of the recently departed Muhammad Ali who once said, “Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them…a desire, a dream, a vision.” So, I say to you on June 14th, 2017, soon to be “graduates” of OCIS…anyone can be a champion…dream…see your goals…and be a good person.
